FAQ's for HD formats
HD video generally refers to a higher resolution than standard definition (SD) NTSC or PAL video. HD display resolutions are most commonly presented at the following resolutions: 720p - 1280x720 or 1080i & 1080p – 1920x1080. “I” stands for Progressive Interlace Scanning” “P” stands for Progressive Image Scanning”
HDCam is the most commonly used HD tape format at this time. HDCam uses 4:2:2 sampling, 4 audio channels and includes all 1080 line formats (i.e. 60i, 59.94i, 50i, 30Psf, 29.97Psf, 25Psf, 24Psf, 23.98Psf).
HDCam SR offers improved picture quality over standard HDCam. SR offers a choice between 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 sampling, up to 12 audio channels and includes all 1080 line formats in addition to 720 59.94p / 50p.
HDD5 supports the same HD formats as HDCam, with the addition 720/59.94p and up to 8 audio channels. (HDD5 can also be used for SD recording)
DVC Pro HD's sampling is 4:2:2 with 8 audio tracks and includes 1080 line 59.94i/50i and 720p 59.94p.
HDV tapes are essential miniDV tapes recorded in HD. The HD format uses MPEG 2 compression 4:2:0 sampling and stereo audio.
PAL HD is the High Definition Format most commonly used overseas. It is formatted at 1080i50 which means it has 1920 x 1080 pixels, interlaced encoding with 50 fields per second. The United States uses NTSC which has 60 fields per second.
