What is HD Standards Conversion?
Converting between video standards is a complex process involving conversion between a different number of pixels and different frame rates. For example, PAL is 625 lines at 50 fields/sec and NTSC is 525 lines at 60 fields/sec. It is clear that the line count is different by 100 lines as well as the 10 fields/sec difference. When converting from PAL to NTSC, the converter must create an additional 10 every seconds by creating new frames from the frames that are available and in real time. It is safe to say that not all converters are created equal.
TV contains many hidden signals and not all signals transfer when converting from one standard to another. Closed captioning is one of these signals. When converting between HD standards (i.e. HD cross conversion), the closed captioning signal is lost. For this reason, when closed captioning in
HD, we create two closed captioned masters in 720p and 1080i.
